https://world.hey.com/dhh/why-don-t-more-people-use-linux-33b75f53 - honest question: Why don't you personally use Linux? 😄
i
Lol secretly an ad in disguise.
Nah but he asks a good question. I like Linux, but at work I use a MacBook for convenience. I get just enough terminal power (compared to Windows) without running into as many of the headaches as a Linux User might. Plus, when it comes to developing for iOS, Apple seems to make it a pain to do that on any OS besides MacOS (unless that's changed). The other platforms don't seem as "gatekeep-y". That was my main motivation for choosing a MacBook for my job.
d
Fair enough 😁
I've been a very happy pop_os user for a while now
ubuntu before that
i
pop_os, huh? Haven't heard of that one. 🤔
Yeah Ubuntu is what I reach for by default with Linux too
d
based on ubuntu, but much better IMO
saner update policies, general stability, consistency across updates
i
Oh wow. Maybe I'll check it out sometime. 🤔
The Linux ecosystem is so huge. lol
d
that's true
the amount of choices is a blessing and a curse 😄
pretty overwhelming for newcomers for sure
k
heyy! Windows user here 🙂
i
Powerful. Is that what you've primarily used when it comes to computers or have you explored other OS options too?
I once had a friend who tri-booted Windows, Linux, and MacOS on the same machine 🤔
k
Primarily, yes! I tried making a switch once. took out windows and installed ubuntu. Used that for a while and got tired of the UI for most of the apps (I used to do design a lot then, hhaha). then dual-booted with windows. after a while realised since the dual booting I havn't launched the ubuntu. took it out a while after. Since then I've been mostly on windows. macos sparsely for a period. had some fun with kali for awhile too.
d
exactly the kind of madness I love 😄
one thing I do absolutely agree with from the article
is that Linux really makes you understand computers in a more "under-the-hood" way
at one point, I had to recompile GPU drivers (the old AMD ones) and my kernel to make sure I was able to use all of the video outputs on the laptop I had back then
of course, I broke the installation at least four times before making it work
but once I got it working... 🎉
i
lol I feel you, dude. College is where I was first forced to learn Linux. And I did a lot of back-and-forth between dual-booting OS's, wiping one out, etc. Actually, during that time, Linux wouldn't work on one of the computers that I had. So I ended up leaving Windows on one of them and then getting Linux on another machine. Since I still have those computers, I usually end up choosing a specific computer depending on what I want to accomplish. Linux is typically for development. Windows is for games. (It's hard to do games on Linux sometimes. 😔)
I tried using WSL(2). Definitely nice. But I ran into some issues when trying to use SvelteKit. 😕 I wonder if that bug's been fixed yet.
LOL! Yeah that's the part I was always scared of. Didn't want to go around breaking things accidentally. I think at some point I'd like to try doing stuff like that. I'd just want to do it in a "safe space" where I still have something to fallback on if I absolutely obliterate everything.
